The game has taken place in Pienza since the 1970s, on the first Sunday of September. The setting is that of the splendid Piazza Pio II, where about 500 years ago, Rossellino left a marble ring in the center of the pavement. In the center of this marble ring a spindle is inserted which constitutes the center: the internal area of the ring is worth 5 points, the band of the ring 4, the outermost circles worth 3,2 and 1 are drawn with chalk.
Six districts compete in the “Cacio al fuso”: San Piero, Il Prato, La Mura, Gozzante, Case Nuove and Casello.
The game is very simple: one at a time the players kneel down and throw a wheel of Pecorino di Pienza on the paved floor of the square trying to get it to stop as close to the spindle as possible. You think it’s easy?! Not by chance, it takes a lot of experience, obviously the district with the highest score wins.
